At a Kingston Arts Center, Inaugural Biennial Showcases the Hudson Valley’s Photography Boom

“Can you call this the Hudson River School of Photography?”

That’s the question museumgoers keep asking at the Upstate Photography Biennial, an exhibition of 39 photographers living and working across the Hudson Valley and Upstate New York. Such reactions invoke the Hudson River School, a 19th-century movement of landscape painters like Frederic Church and Thomas Cole, and draw comparison between the regional concentration of painters then and the thriving community of photographers here today.

Currently on view at Kingston’s CPW is its inaugural Upstate Photography Biennial, featuring 39 artists working across the Hudson Valley and Upstate New York. (Photographs by Adrianna Ault, documented by Ryan Rusiecki)

Making a book is a process of transformation. Ideas are tested, revised, abandoned, and rediscovered as a project moves from conception to publication. The path is rarely direct, and the finished book often reveals only a fraction of the work that brought it into being.

Bound: The Making of a Photobook celebrates the many stages of the development of photobooks by presenting examples of bookmaking from book dummy to final publication. Whether created as a singular object or produced in a large edition, behind each book is a unique process of experimentation, decision-making, compromise, and craft.

This exhibition showcases student-made books from many of the classes and workshops that CPW has offered over the last year, taught by artists Adrianna Ault, Raymond Meeks, and Vladimir Nahitchevansky. Also included are books made by students from Bard College, who worked closely with faculty in the Photography Program to produce a photobook their senior year. These books made across CPW and Bard College photography communities highlight the interdisciplinary, experimental, and collaborative nature of photobookmaking.
