Impeded Stream
For the last ten years, this growing body of work has been centered on a singular stretch of family land in central Ohio. Impeded Stream is the culmination of this long-form observation. It began as a record of lineage after the auctioning of my family farm in 2016 and has evolved into a rigorous archive of transition. It is a deeply personal exploration of grief and the loss of family, mirrored in the physical lifecycle of a structure
For the last several years, I have documented the steady dismantling, demolition, and eventual burning of the first barn on my grandfather's land. In this work, the building serves as a surrogate for the family members who are no longer here. By witnessing its dissolution, I am exploring the cadence of disappearance. Physically transforming from the heavy, rooted presence of timber and metal to the ephemeral state of ash.
Impeded Stream seeks to bridge the gap between this specific history and the universal experience of loss and renewal. I am investigating how a structure, once leveled, reconstitutes into something entirely new, not only as physical residue, but as a reshaped narrative of memory. Through this archive, I am document how the photographic image can hold the weight of what has been lost, translating a physical demolition into a permanent, tactile record of what remains.
